- religious vocatives
- The vocatives that are used in Christian prayers and invocations would merit a special study. In this book the use of words like ‘Father’ and ‘Queen’, addressed in prayers to God and the Virgin Mary, has not been discussed in the articles on those terms. There follows a list of the vocative expressions which occurred in fifty representative novels, with the number of occurrences indicated: Angel of God, my Guardian dear (1); Christ (2); Christ Jesus (1); dear God (2); Domine (‘Lord’) (8); Father (3); God (41); Heart of Jesus (1); Holy Mary (1); Jesus Meek and Mild (1); Lamb of God (1); Lord (9); Lord Jesus Christ (1); Lord of the seedtime and the harvest (1); Mary Mother (2); Most Merciful Father (1); my God (2).In novels by Roman Catholic writers more of the many titles of the Virgin Mary are likely to occur. The Stone Angel, for example, by Margaret Laurence, has: Holy mother of God; Queen of Apostles; Queen of Martyrs; Health of the weak; Refuge of sinners. Pray for the Wanderer, by Kate O’Brien, has: Bright Queen; Star of the Sea.In Catholic countries some of these vocative titles have become names in their own right, e.g. Dolores, Mercedes, Pilar.
